If we hold a belief strongly, we go through life looking for reasons that prove it’s true. So if we believe that our supervisors do not have our best interests at heart, then we perceive it in everything they do. We confirm our favorite negative prophecy at every turn. On the other hand, if we believe good things are likely to come our way, we tend to spin mediocre events into “the beginning of something great” and end up investing the effort to make it a reality.

Did you know that your conscious mind is only 1/6 of your brains total capacity, and the remainder (5/6) is your unconscious mind? So when we decide that Monday is that day we are using our willpower to create change in our lives - that is our conscious mind - we are only using 1/6 of our total capacity. The problem with our conscious mind is that it can only do so much at one time before it starts dropping balls and becoming overloaded. This is the time we start feeling overwhelmed or sometimes even a failure as we struggle to stick to our resolve. In fact it is the clue to why willpower as a tool is ineffective in making permanent change in our lives.

Limiting beliefs run deep. They usually start with our caregivers who may say or treat us in ways that cultivate this mental dis-ease. And the excuses we internalize only serve to reinforce limiting beliefs that become a self fulfilling prophecy. And, of course, you get the same results and nothing changes.
